Oh yeah, saw the Golden Compass - LOVED IT. Even if religious groups are all up in arms because it was "written by an atheist". Oh No! somebody might get the idea that some religions misuse their power over people! We can't have them thinking THAT!
Movie was good, though. Excellent jet-driven blimps and stuff like that. Enormous plot holes, but lovable ones. See it

I liked it too, it was fun and creative.
I heard the book was great so it was on my to-read list, then I got forwarded an email from the bishop with review links for parents saying it was about children trying to kill God. Confusing. I didn't look into it any further either way, so it's good to hear a good review from people I know basically aren't crazy.
Wait, he's not crazy?
I want to see it, but I loved this so-so review for calling it a "chronicle of blarnia". There's also this piece on the removal of religious elements that were in the book.
Thanks for the review. I'm going back and forth on seeing it. I read all the three books as a kid. Yeah, I'm that young. It's a fantastic tale, well written, imaginative and empowering. But the characters are ultimately attempting to kill god or God, depending on your view. (You figure this out in the late part of the second, maybe third book.)They splice through the dimensions trying to climb ever higher and into the heavenly realms to do battle with angels and other heavenly beings. It's a war in heaven so to speak. A veritable Tower of Babel with different characters taking side. Shadey? Possibly, but who wouldn't want a daemon?
Wait a second, that's not very atheistic - to want to kill god, you have to believe there's something there to kill, right?
Anyway, it's visually very appealing; that's reason enough to like it. Also, you might get to see a preview for Prince Caspian, like we did, so religiously it all balances out.
I can't believe you SAW that! Don't you have standards? ...we saw it too and I don't understand what all the hoopla was all about. I did hear, the anti-organized religion themes were toned down for the movie. We like it as well.
The ONLY thing I would change about it, is that Daniel Craig was were too many clothes and he wasn't in it enough.
No. The book was amazing. Have you read it? The movie pales. Everything pales. The gyptians were boring and the daemons were like afterthoughts and the ending was awful. Anyone possibly still reading this, read the book.
